We don't see it that way. We're too busy trying to build our platforms to make it to the promised land. But being ignored provides a quiet laboratory for doing your thing, figuring things out, getting it right. The more successful you become, the less room there is for trial-and-error, for innovation.
Agreed, to a point. I see too many "authors" and "people with a mission" getting the "platform building" part out of balance in many cases. The tilt their focus on it too much instead of the reason to have a platform in the first place.
It's like this, in my opinion:
If you want people to talk about you (or your cause), do something worth talking about.
The "something worth talking about" often happens in the shadows until it's impact is enough that others begin to see.
