Good, honest post. It seems that the rule-breakers are the ones doing work that deserves to be noticed these days. So, good for you.

What about getting intensedebate? That might help your comments and community issue.

Also...typepads debaulft avatars suck..just sayin' it would be nice to have pictures beside the names.

Yeah, I don't know that #2 and #3 are really rules. Is there a consensus on doing both of those?

Nice post to think about though. I've started going over some of the rules I'm breaking... and why. That's the important thing. Breaking some rules is fine, even beneficial, if you actually have a good reason for doing it.

Ben, wouldn't it have been much easier to just say "content is king"??!

All of these make what it is...almost like this is your niche

I mean I like a blog that's not "perfectly designed"

Seth Godin has 50bajillllion readers, and he doesn't advertise directly, but his blog surely pays dividends, as I imagine yours does as well.

By not advertising, your links are hugely effective (I would imagine). I rarely click on ads, but frequently click on links that the author (especially here) seems to truly buy into.
And, the minimalist typepad design has a certain anti-huge blog feel about it, which is sweet.

Okay so I just need to blog. BEN - I am so thankful for you. I think I'll post a pic of an empty plate to represent my absence from my blog. At first it was because I was tired - uninspired. Now it's because I've been busy working towards some new dreams and passions. Thanks for keeping me accountable and for remembering me!
