Only had time to attend one session at Erwin McManus' Awaken Conference here in Pasadena... but it was Bill Hybels, which means awesomeness. He talked about having a vision worth dying for... and the difference between owner and hireling mindsets.
As the visionary confronts great difficulty, an owner will sacrifice and persevere through it. But a hireling will try to reduce the level of personal cost... and get out.
A fun little quote:
Wayne Cordiero: "Hugging Bill [Hybels] is like hugging an ironing board."

Ben,
It's amazing how someone can articulate something that you or I have been chewing on so long and can't find the words.
Owner vs. hireling is definitely seen in the church planting realm when the price is so high. Unfortunately, the tremendous personal cost that must be paid separates staff and staff spouses into one of these two camps rather quickly.

You're not kidding Brian. Such an obvious break-down of the two camps.

Did you see the cool asian-themed WHITEBOARD that Bill used? Some of the folks at Mosaic build it during last year's Origins conference overnight! It's one of the coolest rush jobs I've ever seen. Maybe you can talk to someone at Mosaic about building you some cool whiteboards overnight. :-) Now that I've revealed my take away from the Bill Hybels session, you can probably figure out why my leadership is so shallow :-) Seriously, it was one of the best sessions of the day. God has truly blessed him with tremendous wisdom...and cool whiteboards.
