I'm getting so charged from reading leadership lessons in the book of Joshua this month. This conversation in the promised land, from Joshua 17:14-15:
The people of Joseph said to Joshua, "Why have you given us only one allotment and one portion for an inheritance? We are a numerous people and the LORD has blessed us abundantly." "If you are so numerous," Joshua answered, "and if the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you, go up into the forest and clear land for yourselves there in the land of the Perizzites and Rephaites."
Often, God's gifts come with "some assembly required."
It's facinating to see how much work was required to possess the promised land. Fighting giants, collapsing cities, clearing trees... Ugh, some promised land. =) I wonder if it's to see how badly we want his gift, how much we desire his plan for our lives. Without these challenges, we could easily tout our faith in claiming these promises, but put none of it to work in possessing them. See the book of James for actionless faith.
