The Name Game, cont'd
We gave History folks a list of church names this morning and asked for feedback on our potential new name. Some insightful results. We determined from our surveys both inside and outside the church that people [overwhelmingly]: 1. want the word Reston in the name. 2. enjoy words like "hope" and "new" in a name. And 3. are not willing to fight for the name History. =)
People seemed to be tickled by the creative names, but ultimately preferred the familiar ["New Hope" for example, is quite possibly one of the most common church names in the world.]
I'm reading a great book called Applebee's America, which addresses the polling tactics of business leaders, politicians and churches. Mclean Bible [our resident mecca... er... mega-church=] was featured predominently in the book for their focus group studies which have defined how they do ministry. All I can say is... after this name-polling endeavor and reading this book, I'll never guess at anything again. Asking people questions reveals much different things than I would have ever guessed.
I thought that Reston should be in the name as well when you forst posted about this. Reston is a beautiful, phonetically pleasing word. Take advantage of that. You want people to like saying the name of your church.
That's why we went with "Basilica"... people like to say it.
As far as the rest of the name, I have no idea... Reston Community Church is probably taken...

I once heard it said that opinions are a lot like... oh, wait... nevermind. :)
Seriously, here's my idea...
"No Reston for the Weary." You can thank me later :)

I'm thinking that "Reston Peace Church" is probably not on the list...

Have you surveyed words like "love" or "tenderness"?
